Tough Coleus Color

Bright colorful gardens are a challenge in our late summer Mississippi heat. Many flowers may struggle this time of year, but the bright foliage of coleus continues to hang tough. Coleus comes in an unbelievable range of colors, shapes and sizes that can fit into any garden. The South Mississippi Branch Station trial gardens contain a fantastic collection of sensational coleus that thrives in our full sun gardens and landscapes. The Colorblaze Royale Brandy series has a few intoxicating choices. Royale Apple Brandy has deep and rich burgundy maroon leaves with a lime green to yellow margin. The heavily serrated foliage of Royale Cherry Brandy is a deep burgundy color that becomes more pronounced in full sun. Royale Pineapple Brandy is a beautiful selection featuring yellow chartreuse luminescent foliage with burgundy bronze accents. The Colorblaze Royale Brandy series plants are slow to flower, grow up to 30 inches tall and 24 inches wide and are sensational in the full sun. Chocolate Covered Cherry is a great choice for sun with its non-fading color. The color pattern is gorgeous displaying a rose center surrounded by deep mahogany and edged in thin mint green. There is high color contrast with Chocolate Mint coleus. The velvety foliage is a chocolate brown with a margin of minty lime green. Many coleus selections produce flower spikes, simply pinch off to tidy up the plants. Plants with brightly colored foliage are an easy way to maintain landscape color in the summer heat. I’m horticulturist Gary Bachman and I’ll see you next time on Southern Gardening.
