Treatment and Preservation
Wood has been used for centuries as an important building material. Many of our homes, businesses, and government buildings are built using wood. The reason we use wood for building is very simple; it is light, strong, and widely available, along with being easy to work with.
Wood is a biological material. In nature, when a tree falls to the ground, wood-destroying organisms break the wood down. If this did not happen, the world would be covered with random logs, making it very difficult to do our favorite activities in the forest. So in that sense, wood decay is important.
The same organisms that rot logs in the forest can rot the wood in our homes and buildings. With a few precautions, the homes, buildings, and structures we build can last a lifetime or even more.
