Water pennywort is a native perennial, shoreline plant found throughout Mississippi. It spreads horizontally in mud or floats on the water surface. The leaves are nearly round with a scalloped margin. The stems, which may reach 10-12 inches long, are attached to the bottom of the leaves in the center of the leaves. Small white flowers appear in an umbrella shaped head that is borne on stalks as long as the leaf stalks. It flowers from May through September in Mississippi and reproduces both by seed and by vegetative means.

Growth usually begins on shoreline mud and the plants gradually creep into open water. Mats sometimes break off to form floating islands. Water pennywort can sometimes create a significant nuisance, interfering with fishing and other water-related recreation. Either treatment listed will provide satisfactory control.
