American lotus (Nelumbo lutea) leaves are circular and can be as large as 3 feet in diameter. It is easily distinguishable from the white or yellow waterlily because there is no split in the leaf. Leaves may float on the water surface or extend as much as three feet above the water. Leaves and flowers are borne on an erect tuberous rootstock or stalk. American lotus, an attractive aquatic weed, is also known as elephant's ear. It is abundant in Mississippi in ponds, lakes, and occasionally in swamps and sluggish streams.
