Peer Support - Lamar

  • LamarAge: 46
  • Nature of disability: Retinitis Pigmentosa
  • Agricultural operation: Lamar operates a specialty-breeds chicken farm.

"I have been going blind since I was about 12. I have Retinitis Pigmentosa which is a disease that one day will take what little sight I have left away and all I will see is light.

I have started a small chicken farm and sell mostly heavy breed chickens like Rhode Island Reds, Buffs and Barred Rock. I do sell some babies, but mostly sell them when they are pullets around two to five months old.

AgrAbility partnered with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind to help me with pens so that I could have an income to help with our family. I raise all my chickens from my farm.

My best advertisement is word of mouth. I have customers come to my farm year round. I occasionally go to flea markets to sell, but most of our customers just come to the house. I love chickens, so I was blessed when I could turn my hobby into a business that I enjoy."

Is willing to:

  • Talk with others by telephone
  • Invite someone to visit my operation to see worksite and/or home modifications
