Peer Support - Charles
After a motor vehicle accident in 2004 left Charles with total below
the chest paralysis, he began making modifications to his home, making
it wheelchair accessible. The act of getting back on his tractor remained
a puzzle, though, so Charles contacted AgrAbility. The team worked with
his vocational rehabilitation counselor, and the State Department of
Rehabilitation Services secured a sling-lift system and hand controls. Charles
is now able to independently maintain his land and pasture areas.
- Name: Bobby
- Age: 58
- Agricultural operation:
Registered quarter horses and cattle
- Nature of disability:
Left-side paralysis due to a stroke
This Vietnam veteran and three-time Purple Heart recipient knows all
about hard work and perseverance. Even after a stroke left him paralyzed
on the left side, Bobby continued to tend his livestock and operate
his tractor.
He gained access to his tractor using an inverted five-gallon bucket,
then rode side-saddle in order to operate the clutch with his right
foot. Members of the AgrAbility team visited Bobby’s farm and determined
that an extra step and hand controls would be the appropriate solution.
