Shooting Sports Accessible Hunting Shed

Photos of shedMARION COUNTY -- In 2006, the Marion County 4-H Shooting Sports Club responded to Hurricane Katrina’s destruction by rebuilding two accessible hunting sheds on the Marion County Game Reserve.

Each shed, 6’ X 6’, has a concrete landing area to allow easy access.Once inside, hunters can open the window, stabilize their gun on the ledge, and scan the plot for deer, turkey and even squirrel.

Hank Stringer, Marion County Game Reserve Officer, said the accessible hunting sheds are to be used specifically by wheelchair users.

“A 21-year old female who is paraplegic came over from Lincoln County and thoroughly enjoyed using the shed,” said Stringer.

He also noted that a veteran who had his legs damaged in Desert Storm had used the shed as well.

Stringer commented, “The sheds are giving those with disabilities opportunities to hunt they otherwise might not have. They are being used by hunters in numerous counties, and he expects that to increase more as word gets out."
