You Can Make A Difference In The Lives of Young People

4-H is the nonformal educational program of the Cooperative Extension Service of Mississippi State University. 4-H is dedicated to the development of boys and girls ages 8 - 18, through learn-by-doing projects and activities.

4-H focuses on helping adults help youth. You can find YOUR PLACE in the 4-H program.


4-H Club Leader

Helps youth plan and carry out their programs.

Involve club members in these ways:

  • Setting individual goals.
  • Planning activities to achieve goals.
  • Assessing progress toward goals.

Project Leader

Works with club members informally in a project.

Works with 4-H club leader.

Helps conduct a workshop in a project area.


Activity Leader

Helps 4-H members plan and carry out an activity they have planned within their club program.

Works with the 4-H club leader.


Qualifications

Have an interest in young people and a desire to influence their growth as individuals - in skills, character, leadership, and citizenship.


Satisfaction

A 4-H volunteer's satisfaction comes from many sources, including:
  • Working with and assisting young people.
  • Learning while teaching.
  • Influencing the development of young people.
  • Contributing to member accomplishment.
  • Contributing toward career decisions.
  • Knowing you have a stake in tomorrow.

Or as 4-H volunteers say, "...a warm glow of personal satisfaction inside, knowing we've helped some kids learn, or have fun, or find clues to their life's work."

  • Professional advice, guidance, and assistance from Extension 4-H youth agents.
  • Training meetings on how to work with youth in project areas.
  • Project literature for members and volunteers.
  • Community resources.
  • Parents, other volunteers, and 4-H members.
