PERFORMANCE OF RYEGRASSES

Twenty six ryegrass varieties were planted at four locations and one additional variety at two locations. At Pontotoc the mean yield for the test which was harvested 3 times was 7,539 pounds per acre. The two highest yielding varieties were two experimental lines, AR-90-1 and OFI BL3, with yields of 8,326 and 8,240, compared to 7,336 for the variety, Gulf (Table 1). The test at Newto n was harvested 5 times and had an average yield of 8,217 pounds per acre. The highest yield was produced by Jackson, followed by two experimental lines, ME-94 and OFI-BL3, with total yields of 9,069, 8,921, and 8,861, respectively (Table 3). At Raymond, the highest yields were produced by and experimental line, OFI BL3, and Surrey, with yields of 9,983, and 9,825 pounds per acre (Table 5). At Poplarville, there was no significant difference in yields, but there were difference in crown rust (Table 7).
