It will be held during the Mississippi Holstein Annual Meeting in November. Teams for this competition will be made up to two members. The questions used for this competition will come from a Junior Bowl packet that will be developed within the next couple of weeks. OUTSTANDING HOLSTEIN AND JERSEY BOY AND GIRL The Mississippi Holstein Association is again sponsoring the Champion Holstein Boy and Girl Contest. The Mississippi Jersey Cattle Club will also be sponsoring the Champion Jersey Boy and Girl Contest. The contest is open to all 4-H and FFA members 8-18 years of age and owning one or more registered animals. Applications are available through our office and are due by October 1. Presentations of awards to winners will be made at the respective association's annual meetings. If you need more information, please call our office (662-325-3515). MISSISSIPPI JUNIOR DAIRY PRODUCTION Please encourage your 4-H'ers with a dairy project to enter this contest. It is open to any 4-H dairy project member who is the owner of a registered Holstein or Jersey on official test. Entry form JD-1 must be filled out within 60 days after the cow is fresh. Monetary awards are given at the state breed associations' annual meetings held in the fall. REMINDER: MISSISSIPPI 4-H/FFA LIVESTOCK SHOW ETHICS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM GUIDELINES The State Fair will be here soon and if you have new exhibitors who have not completed Ethics Certification, you should provide this training for them in August or September. Let us know, if you need any materials for your training. Listed below are the guidelines that all 4-H/FFA exhibitors must adhere to in order to enter district and state organized competitive youth livestock youth livestock shows, and to complete certification requirements.   4-H/FFA members and at least one parent/guardian involved in animal projects and planning toparticipate in any 4-H/FFA sponsored district and state livestock show must view at least one LIVESTOCK ETHICS video. If time permits, utilize both tapes or use the second tape as a follow-up meeting the following year.   4-H/FFA members and parents/guardians must review and become familiar with the livestock CODE of CONDUCT, CODE of ETHICS, and RULES concerning livestock shows in Mississippi.   CODE of CONDUCT AGREEMENT must be completed by the 4-H/FFA exhibitor and his/her parent/legal guardian. This form will be on two part paper with original copy going to exhibitor and copy maintained in supervising Extension agent/FFA advisor files.   All 4-H/FFA members and their parents/guardians must use all reasonable efforts to demonstrate ethical practices while involved with their animal projects.   Extension agent/FFA advisor will issue CERTIFICATION CARDS to exhibitors upon completion of requirements. Exhibitor numbers will be assigned by the supervising Extension agent/FFA advisor. Certification numbers will be the county number, followed by F (for FFA members) or H (for 4-H members), followed by an individual number starting with number 1 for each county 4-H or FFA Chapter. For example, the first 4-H member from Hinds County 4-H would have number 25H-1 or the first FFA member from Raymond FFA would be 25F-1. A master list of certified exhibitors will be kept in the 4-H Livestock Specialist Office. Agents and advisors should send a list of any new exhibitors completing certification to: Gale Chrestman, Box 9815, Mississippi State, MS 39762   All 4-H/FFA members must be ethics certified to participate in 4-H/FFA sponsored livestock shows in Mississippi. Exhibitors will be certified until 12-31-2000. Re-certification will be required for 2001.   Records to be maintained and kept in files of supervising Extension agent/FFA advisor are:   A listing of exhibitors completing certification requirements with assigned exhibitor numbers. Copy of CODE of CONDUCT AGREEMENT forms.   Each exhibitor should receive: Completed CODE of CONDUCT AGREEMENT form Copy of MAJOR LIVESTOCK SHOW RULES IN MISSISSIPPI CERTIFICATION CARD   It is recommended that Extension Agents and FFA Advisors hold annual ethics seminars focusing on issues of livestock show ethical behavior, rules, etc. SPRING LIVESTOCK SHOWS It is not too early to be thinking about spring shows. Now is the time to be determining additional needs for spring shows (numbers, species, breeds, etc.) and be locating them. REMINDER - NOSEPRINTING MARKET LAMBS AND STEERS All market lambs and steers in the 2000 spring district shows and Dixie National Round-Up Show must be nominated and nose printed by September 15, 1999. Order forms for lamb and steer ear tags, noseprint cards, and nomination forms for steers and lambs have been mailed to you. If you did not receive a copy, please let me know. September 15 will be here soon! Diskettes will be mailed to you the latter part of August or first of September. RULES AND REGULATIONS - 2000 JUNIOR ROUND-UP COMMERCIAL DAIRY HEIFER SHOW (General Rules on Pages 8-15 apply to this show)   Dairy heifers must be owned by the exhibitor on or before December 1, 1999. Heifers must be identified with a clearly visible ear tag on or before December 1, 1999. No more than six (6) head can be entered by an exhibitor. Exhibitor may show only two (2) animals per weight division. Heifers shall meet the following requirements to be eligible: Commercial dairy heifers are dairy cattle offspring of mixed dairy or purebred dairy cattle parents that are not registered by a recognized breed association. No registered animals will be allowed to show in this show. Heifers weighing less than 200 lbs. and more than 750 lbs. at the time of weigh-in at the show will be disqualified and considered over or under conditioned for their age. Typical birth dates for heifers meeting these weight requirements would be between March 1 and October 31, 1999. All heifers must be dehorned. Heifers not dehorned will be disqualified.   Heifers will be sorted into three (3) classes by weight.   Commercial dairy heifer exhibitors will show in the regular showmanship against other exhibitors showing registered dairy animals.   Heifers shown in the Commercial Dairy Heifer Show are not eligible to be shown in any other division at the Mississippi Junior Round-Up.
