Fruit, vegetable growers to meet Nov. 13-15
CHOCTAW – Fruit and vegetable growers can learn the latest tips and techniques at an upcoming conference near Philadelphia.
The Mississippi Fruit and Vegetable Growers Conference and Trade Show will be Nov. 13-15 at the Silver Star Conference Center in Choctaw.
The conference is open to new and experienced growers and other interested individuals. Experts from the Mississippi State University Extension Service and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station will deliver many of the sessions.
Topics include irrigation technologies and selection, high tunnel production, insect and disease management, marketing, agritourism and more.
The event kicks off at noon Nov. 13 at Dancing Rabbit Golf Course with a golf tournament mixer for conference attendees and vendors. A Good Agricultural Practices course begins at 1 p.m. The class teaches growers techniques to minimize microbial food safety hazards for fresh fruits and vegetables.
Information sessions begin at 8 a.m. Nov. 14. The Mississippi Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and the Mississippi Agritourism Association will meet separately after the educational sessions end. The evening concludes with a one-hour Magnolia Fresh Farm-to-Plate reception featuring hors d’oeuvres made with Mississippi-grown produce.
Information sessions resume at 8 a.m. Nov. 15. Silver Star chefs will serve lunch at noon. The day concludes with a tour of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians’ newly expanded high tunnel production farm.
Vendors will exhibit their products throughout the conference.
Early bird registration is $100 per person and ends Oct. 15. Those who register during early bird registration receive a $20 discount for one additional attendee. Registration after Oct. 15 is $125 per person. The registration fee includes a one-year membership in the Mississippi Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association. A $2 processing fee will be charged for online registration.
