MSU to sponsor dairy cow camp

MISSISSIPPI STATE – Mississippi youth and adult volunteer leaders who have 4-H dairy projects or want to start one should plan to attend the 2010 Mississippi 4-H Bulldog Dairy Cow Camp June 17-19 at Mississippi State University.

Registration is $85 per camper and due by June 4. The fee covers housing, meals and other expenses. Campers can purchase T-shirts for an additional $10.

The camp will have a junior track for youth ages 8-13 and a senior track for youth ages 14-18. Most activities will take place on campus and in the surrounding community.

The camp will feature practical learning activities as participants assist with the care, grooming and handling of animals consigned to the 2010 Dixieland All Breeds Dairy Heifer Sale on June 19 at the horse park.

“We revived the dairy cow camp due to popular demand from 4-H’ers, parents and volunteer leaders,” said Lamar Adams, Extension dairy specialist in MSU’s Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences. “We are building upon the successes of our previous two camps by adding an extra day of exciting activities related to dairying and 4-H youth development.”

The Dixieland sale will include several young heifers with productive pedigrees and sound structural characteristics that can make these animals good competitors in youth dairy shows. It also gives dairy producers an opportunity to add productive animals to their herds, Adams said.

“Youth who want to participate in the 4-H Dairy Project and producers who want to buy replacement heifers should attend the sale so they can place bids on animals they want,” he said.

Campers must include two completed 4-H Events Health History forms and one completed 4-H General Rules and Release/Code of Conduct form with their registration applications. These documents, along with the registration form, are available from local county Extension offices.

Registration forms also are online at http://msucares.com/calendar/june10/camp.pdf. Make checks payable to the Mississippi Holstein Association.
