MSU’s early childhood programs recognized

MISSISSIPPI STATE -- A Mississippi State University program recently was honored for its early childhood training workshops.

The MSU Extension Service Child Care Resource and Referral Network received the 2008 Swimmy Award during the Mississippi Early Childhood Association’s annual conference held in October in Jackson. The Swimmy Award is based on the children’s book “Swimmy” by Leo Lionni, an internationally known author and artist. The award is presented to organizations for their collaboration, teamwork and dedication to Mississippi’s youth.

The association chose the MSU Extension group for its work with Mississippi’s early care and education providers in implementing early childhood programs and workshops.

The group’s resource and referral staff, child and family Extension area agents and Nurturing Homes Initiative staff provide early childhood development training programs to child-care professionals throughout the state. One of the many programs emphasizes 3- and 4-year-old early learning guidelines and age appropriate teaching strategies.

“The success of our program is a direct result of good teamwork, and we are proud to have that recognized,” said Louise Davis, Extension child and family development specialist. “The award is not given every year, so we feel especially proud of receiving this honor.”
