Learn how to grow fresh air

MISSISSIPPI STATE – A video conference on Sept. 26 will help participants learn the value of plants for improving indoor air quality.

The two-hour conference will begin at 10 a.m. in locations around the state. Contact county Extension Service offices for local availability.

Kerry Johnson, area horticulturist in George County with Mississippi State University’s Extension Service, said the concept for the conference started as a Master Gardener effort called the 4-H Fresh Air Project.

“Master Gardeners from Pearl River County began supplying plants for classrooms in their county to create clean air environments for students last year, but their efforts were interrupted by the hurricane,” Johnson said. “The conference will emphasize the importance of creating clean air in schools and demonstrate an easy-to-use environmental program for teachers.”

The guest speaker for the conference will be Bill Wolverton, author of “How to Grow Fresh Air.”

“Dr. Wolverton's research while a NASA employee demonstrated how common houseplants can actually clean the air by removing common pollutants,” Johnson said.
