Pecan growers offered a hands-on workshop

MISSISSIPPI STATE -- An April 27 workshop will offer half a day of classroom instruction and an afternoon of hands-on instructional work for interested pecan growers.

The Mississippi-Louisiana Pecan Growers Meeting is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Truck Crops Branch Experiment Station in Crystal Springs. It is sponsored by the Mississippi State University Extension Service, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and Louisiana State University. There is no cost to attend.

Morning sessions will cover pecan scab control, insecticide management and new insecticides, pecan orchard fertility and low input pecan varieties. The afternoon session will move outdoors.

Three stations will be set up in the pecan orchard on the experiment station premises focusing on entomology, pathology and horticulture related to pecans. Entomologists Mike Hall (LSU) and Blake Layton (MSU); plant pathologists David Ingram (MSU) and Randy Sanderlin (LSU); and horticulturists John Pyzner (LSU), Charlie Graham (LSU) and John Braswell (MSU) will man these stations.
