Tuesday's election results not only changed the political landscape...It also has changed the political make up of the lawmakers who write the next farm bill during the next two years. Direct evidence of the shakeup can be found at home. In all a third of the members of the house agriculture committee either lost or quit to run for other offices. One of those losses occurred in northeast Mississippi. Mississippi's second district congressman, democrat Travis Childers, was the lone Mississippian on the house Ag-committee. It's uncertain whether his loss to republican Alan Nunnelee will leave Mississippi with no representation. In all 14 of the 46 congressmen on the committee lost reelection bids. One republican, Jerry Moran of Kansas, will leave the House Agriculture Committee because he won election to the U.S. senate. Since the republicans will be a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, the chairmanship of the House Agriculture Committee will change. Republican Frank Lucas of oklahoma will likely become the chairman. The present chairman, democrat Collin Peterson of Minnesota, will probably become the ranking minority member. Even though the democrats maintain control of the U.S. senate, the election still sent shockwaves through the senate agriculture committee. Democrat blanche Lincoln of Arkansas lost her re-election bid. Southern interests were well-represented on the committee with Lincoln as chairman and republican Saxby Chambliss of Georgia as the ranking minority member. Committee member and democrat Debbie Stabenow of Michigan is said to be the front-runner to replace Lincoln. Republican Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi also serves on the senate agriculture committee.
