The Mississippi Forestry Association named Julian Watson of Jackson as its 2009 "Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year" October 29. Watson's face is a familiar one to long-time Farmweek viewers. Farmweek was there in the winter of 1984-85 when he first began to plant pine trees on his family's land in Holmes County. Watson admits to knowing little about trees when he started the tree farm, but he did his homework and decided trees were the way of the future.

Lamar County, Mississippi (Purvis). "Go Gardens" are an innovative and successful way to interest and teach conservation to young people. The Lamar County Soil and Water Conservation District has provided Go Gardens to every county school with first graders. Teachers report the gardens give their students a sense of ownership and an excitement to learn. Go Gardens can be used to teach anything from vocabulary to math to art.
Go Gardens are also finding a great reception at nursing homes and assisted-living facilties. It allows the residents to garden regardless of their mobility.

Like the covered bridge and one-room schoolhouse, the American barn is rapidly disappearing from the landscape. As an incentive to preserve the symbols of agricultures past, a federal income tax program allows a credit equal to 20% percent of the amount spent rehabilitating a historic barn.
As Market to Market's Laurel Bower Burgmaier discovered, a growing number of "Pennsylvania barn huggers" are working to preserve the iconic structures.

Three Mississippi registered bull producers have joined together to market their bulls. They operated separately, but they join together for an annual sale held the first Saturday of March. The cooperation has improved the quality of their bulls and their incomes.

Mississippi AgraAbility Helping West Nile Virus Patient to Recover

Leeann Hines of Greenwood, Mississippi, contracted West Nile Virus from mosquito bite in 2007. Despite some paralysis, she is continuing to recover. The Mississippi AgrAbility Program is working with her to fix her tractor where she can continue to take care of her horses. Reporter: Amy Taylor.

It was recognized early on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that quality child care had to exist before parents could work on the recovery after Hurricane Katrina.
