Vertical Flowers

There’s nothing like beautiful flowering plants in the summer garden.  Today I’m at Coaches Cedar Creek in Lucedale looking at plants with stunning vertical flowers.
Victoria Blue salvia is a must have garden perennial and was selected as a Mississippi Medallion plant in 1998.  Known botanically as Salvia farinacea, the plants are compact 18 inches tall.  The flower spikes are floriferous adding a valued deep violet blue color to the garden.  There is also Victoria White, producing white flower spikes.  These are good selections for areas with poor soil conditions.  An annual salvia series that is an outstanding bedding plant are the Vista salvia.  Good color choices are Vista Red and Vista Purple.  These plants are well branched, have good dark green foliage, and have dense flower heads.  Vista salvia will put on a tremendous show and hold their color without fading through the heat and bright light of summer.  Plumed Celosia are beautiful plants with vertical feathery flowers.  These annuals are a great choice for our hot and dry summers.  The Castle Series Mix will grow to 16 inches tall and when mass planted resemble a colorful family of gnomes.  Flower colors include orange, yellow, pink, and red.  Another plumed celosia you should try is called New Look.  New Look has four-inch flower plumes that are bright red and complement the red-tinged leaves.
Try some of these vertical flowers in your garden and landscape, I’m sure your will enjoy them.  I’m Gary Bachman for Southern Gardening.
