Artful Garden

Adding art is a way to transfer your personality to the garden.  Today I’m in the artful garden of my friends Kathy and Brian, enjoying the fanciful landscape.  Entering the garden you are greeted with this garden art wonderfully surrounded by the drifts of liriope.  The double pink Knockout roses add splashes of color offset by the solid light green of the foliage.  Set in around the base of the art are zinnia and coneflower that will provide a blanket of color through the summer. The bubbling sounds of moving water from this large textured fountain urn is soothing and relaxing.  The scene is very natural looking with the river rock base and clumps of liriope.  This garden fairy keeps vigilant watch over the moving water.  Other water features, such as this small pond, play a prominent role in Kathy’s garden.  The pond is edged in large rock with an old water hand pump.  The pond is surrounded by Plentifall pansy and spreading yellow tickseed.  The unique flowers of blue-eyed grass adds an element of interest.  This birdbath, surrounded by colorful flowers, is the focal point to this landscaped bed.  This repurposed oil can looks like it’s pouring its contents of orange zinnia into the birdbath.  Any vessel that can hold potting mix can be a container and add garden interest.  And the gnomes playing around this old watering can add a light touch. And from a pure art perspective, I love this divider panel containing the colorful glass bottoms from old wine bottles.  Go ahead and be creative in your garden, and don’t be afraid to take chances.  I’m Gary Bachman for Southern Gardening.
