If you think gardening is for the birds, it is…and lizards too! And here in Greenwood, Mississippi, Archie and Belinda Colinger have created a colorful environment, filled with yard art, that just screams we have fun in our garden.
Belinda has a passion for flamingoes and she uses them throughout the garden. You’ll find plastic and metal birds in all shapes and sizes.
Here, hot-pink flamingoes and smaller, white selections are partnered with bananas and cannas.
Others are tucked under the feathery branches of a pindo palm. But my favorite may be the lighter pink flamingoes combined with the tropical, elephant-ear-like caladiums and lush-foliaged hostas.
Keep your eyes open, because there are flamingoes on trees, lattice work, and tucked away in unsuspected places.
You’ll even find flamingoes in the cabana-like, covered patio with its lush, hanging ferns. Here, flamingoes are featured in artwork, and a window painting done by famed artist Vickie Gilbert.
You’ll also find other birds, like this pair that lights up the shady, hosta garden.
As showy as the birds are, it may be the lizards and frogs that steal the show. These creatures adorn the fence in various garden spots and feature brilliant colors that can be seen from across the garden.
It’s obvious that Archie and Belinda Colinger have fun in their garden and they hope you do too! I’m Norman Winter for Southern Gardening.
