Just outside Belzoni Mississippi, on Highway 7, there is an oasis known as Wister Gardens, or as some say, “The Delta’s Garden”. But Mississippi Magazine proved it’s much more than that, when they honored it as Mississippi’s Best Garden.
As you enter the gardens, you pass through an allee of stately live oaks adjacent to fields of corn. The home sits like a painting, surrounded by tall trees and lush gardens.
Throughout the garden there are hardscape features you’ll want to visit. The focal point is a large fountain from Italy which is installed on an Artesian well. One of the most picturesque hardscapes however, is the six-sided gazebo flanked by colorful orange and yellow cannas.
Keep your eyes open for well-placed pieces of statuary. The Johnny Appleseed statue was given to Mr. Wister Henry as an honor from the Men’s Garden Club of America. It’s the highest award given to a gardener.
One of the most scenic areas of the 14 acre garden is a small lake. This area is perfect for a late afternoon stroll.
In the spring, azalea blooms draw visitors, but now in early summer the daylily steals the show. There are thousands of daylilies. You can learn about daylily combinations here, so you can use them more effectively in your own landscape.
The Woodland areas are some of my favorites. Paths take you by native shrub
palmetto palms, lacecap hydrangeas, variegated aucuba, and large oleanders.
There is always something to see at Wister Gardens in Belzoni, Mississippi.
Come and see why it was chosen as the best garden in Mississippi. I’m Norman
