Dairy Cattle in Mississippi
Mississippi has a small, but active dairy industry. There are dairy farms scattered across the state, but a hub of activity exists in Walthall and surrounding counties in southwest Mississippi. While the number of dairy farms is decreasing, which follows a national trend, the state is trying to capitalize on the abundant forages available in the state. The number of grazing-based dairies is increasing. In 2007, Mississippi’s dairy industry generated an estimated $277.6 million in economic revenue.
Mississippi State University is committed to the state’s dairy producers. Mr. Lamar Adams, Dairy Extension Specialist, is the link between the research conducted at MSU and the dairy producers in Mississippi. He conducts various field days and Extension programming events throughout the year, and is available to answer questions from individual dairy producers. Dr. Stephanie Hill, Nutrition and Management, and Dr. Jamie Larson, Reproductive Physiology, hold research and teaching appointments. This team of faculty is committed to the state’s dairy industry and producers; feel free to contact them with questions.
This program provides an interest free loan to Mississippi dairy farmers to help defray some of the increasing costs of shipping milk from the farm to processing plants.
