Beef production is a significant component of Mississippi agriculture. The total value of production of cattle and calves in Mississippi exceeded $155 million in 2011, ranking 7th among the state’s agricultural commodities. Total cattle inventory in Mississippi on January 1, 2012 was 950,000 head including 486,000 head of beef cows and 82,000 head of beef cow replacements. Stocker cattle production is also very prominent with 400,000 head of stocker cattle residing in the state annually. Beef cattle operations in Mississippi currently total approximately 18,000 operations. |

With the certainty of historic flooding along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, requests for pasture outside the floodplain are being made. Anyone with pasture to lease or donate for a period of weeks to months, please contact the Mississippi Cattlemen's Association office. They will pass the contact information along to those needing to move cattle. |
