for business As you enjoy reading the newspaper this morning with a freshly brewed cup of coffee, I hope you and your gardening friends are making plans to attend the Gulf Coast Garden and Patio Show this weekend at the Orange Grove/Lyman Community Center in Gulfport. Two days of educational seminars combined with browsing and shopping for the hottest plants on the market should provide a fun-filled experience for gardeners everywhere. I am pleased to announce the beginning of another Extension Service project that furthers our mission to enhance the social and economic well being of Mississippians. February 18 marked the beginning of the new season for the Gulf Coast GardenTalk Extension Hotline. Gardeners can call 228-865-4483 locally or toll free 1-866-GARDEN-8 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 12 noon and get answers to all their lawn and garden questions from trained Master Gardener volunteers. This project-the first of its kind in the state-was modeled after a highly successful program in Alabama. During its first year of operation in 2001, the hotline served more than 1,800 South Mississippians in the six Coastal counties. Trained Master Gardener volunteers utilize their skills to help others make sound decisions. This project is nothing new for the Extension Service. Trained Master Gardener volunteers staff horticulture hotlines across America to help Extension professionals deliver unbiased, research-based information in a timely manner to local citizens. Rapidly growing areas such as the Gulf Coast benefit greatly from this service, as urban horticulture needs are significant. I hope you agree this service can work for you, too. Go ahead.
