Yellowstriped
Armyworms: Yellowstriped
armyworms are common in Missisippi cotton fields throughout the growing
season, but seldom occur in damaging numbers. They are easily identified
by the absence of body hairs and the distinct yellow stripe that runs
along either side of the body. Yellowstriped armyworms can be easily
distinguished from beet armyworms by the white
inverted "Y" that appears on the head capsule, similar to that
found on fall armyworms. Southern
armyworm is another armyworm that occasionally occurs in Mississippi
cotton, though rarely at treatable levels. This armyworm, which because
of its large egg masses is often found in large clusters, is highly
variable in color and markings.
