Fruit Moos


Yield: 10 Servings Serving Size: 1/2 cup or 4 oz.

You will need:

1 tray of ice cubes, crushed
3 cups vanilla ice cream
2-16 oz. Cans of fruit cocktail, drained
2 cups of orange juice

What you will do:

  1. Place all ingredients in a blender and whirl.
  2. Place blender in freezer, but only for one hour so that it does not become hard.
  3. Serve.
*NOTE: Make sure child is not allergic to milk products before serving.

Painted Toast

Yields: 12 servings Serving size: ½ slice of bread

You will need:

1/4 cup of milk
6 slices of enriched white or wheat bread
2 to 3 drops of food coloring

What you will do:

  1. Mix your choice of food coloring into the milk.
  2. By using a clean paintbrush, allow the children to paint their bread different colors.
  3. Toast the bread and see the results.

*NOTE: Buy a set of small paintbrushes for the children to use only for cooking projects.

Peach Delight

Yields: 1 delight Serving Size: 1 delight

You will need:
2 graham crackers
1 tsp. margarine or butter
1/2 cup of peach slices
9x9 Aluminum foil square

What you will do:
  1. Allow children to crumble the graham crackers onto the piece of foil. (This will help strengthen their fine motor skills).
  2. Allow child to add peaches.
  3. The adult can top the peaches with the margarine or butter.
  4. The adult will fold the edges of the foil and seal tightly.
  5. Bake at 350ºF for about 10 minutes.

Pigs in a Blanket

Yield: 8 Serving Size: 1 pig in a blanket

You will need:

1 container of crescent roll dough

1 package of hot dogs or miniature sausage

What you will do:

  1. The child can roll the hot dog or sausage inside the uncooked rolls.
  2. The adult can place on a cookie sheet and bake as directed.

*To "feed" the pigs, put some ketchup, mustard, or barbecue sauce on the plate for dipping.

Pizza Faces
Yield: 1/2 Serving Size: 1/2 bagel

You Will Need:

1/2 English muffins or bagels
Tomato sauce
Shredded cheese
Toppings (olives, pepperoni, shredded carrot, or peppers)

What you will do:

  1. Toast the English muffin or bagel.
  2. Allow the children to spread tomato sauce on the bread, add the cheese, and use the toppings to create faces.
  3. Melt in the oven for a few minutes at 250° F. Enjoy!

Reindeer Snack


Yields: 18 servings Serving size: 1/2 cup

You will need:
3 cups popped popcorn
3 cups cone shaped nacho cheese flavored corn snacks
2 cups pretzel sticks
1 cup round oat cereal
1/3-cup margarine or butter melted
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1 clove garlic, minced or ¼ tsp. of garlic powder

What you will do:

  1. Preheat oven to 300ºF.
  2. The children can help measure and mix popcorn, cornsnacks, pretzels, and cereal into large bowl.
  3. Mix remaining ingredients separately.
  4. Spread onto baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes, stirring twice.

Rocket Salad

Yield: 1 rocket Serving Size: 1 rocket

You will need:

1 pineapple ring slice
1/2 peeled medium banana
1/2 maraschino cherry
1 lettuce leaf

What the children can do (This is a great recipe that a child can "cook" all by theirself.):

  1. Place lettuce leaf on a small plate.
  2. The "launching pad" is the pineapple ring.
  3. The "rocket" is the banana set upright in the center of the pineapple ring slice.
  4. The "nose cone" is the cherry on top of the banana. Eat and enjoy!!

Sink or Float Salad
Yield: 4 servings Serving size: 1 plastic cup

You will need:

1 envelope unflavored gelatin
1/4 cup apple juice, boiling
1 Tbsp. grape juice
1 1/4 cups cold apple juice
3 ice cubes

Mixture of fruits such as apples, pears, peaches, oranges, bananas, strawberries, grapes, pineapple, apricots, or miniature marshmallows.

What you will do:
  1. Mix the gelatin with the boiling apple juice.
  2. Stir in the remaining ingredients except the mixture of fruits.
  3. Pour 1/2 cup servings into a clear plastic cup.
  4. Have the children place fruit into the juice and watch them either sink or float.
  5. Be sure that there is 1/2 cup of fruit in each serving.
  6. Chill until firm.
*This is a great science and math activity. Talk with children about each item they put in. Does it sink or float? Below is an example graph that you can use with your children to show which fruits sink and which fruits float.

Ships Ahoy!

Yield: 14 ships Serving size: 1 "ship" (egg) for 1-5 year olds

You will need:

7 hard-cooked eggs
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 cup cream style cottage cheese
1/4 tsp. dry mustard
Cheese slices
Thin licorice sticks


What you will do:

  1. After preparing the eggs, cut eggs in half lengthwise.
  2. Place the yolks in a dish and mash with a fork.
  3. Add remaining ingredients except the cheese slices and mix lightly with a fork.
  4. Place the yolk mixture into white halves.
  5. For the sail, attach a licorice stick to a triangular slice of cheese. Insert the "stick" into each egg white.

*NOTE: Make sure that children are not allergic to eggs or dairy products. Also make sure that eggs are fully cooked.

snoflake
Snow Cones
Yield: 8 Serving Size: 1 snow cone snoflake

You will need:

Crushed ice

1 package of flavored drink mix

What you will do:

  1. Mix drink mix by following directions.
  2. Pour over crushed ice and scoop into a plastic cup.
  3. Enjoy!!

Special Spiders
Yield: 1 Serving Size: 3 spiders

You will need:

Round crackers
Creamy peanut butter
Raisins
Thin pretzel sticks

What you will do:

  1. Allow the children to spread peanut butter on one side of the cracker.
  2. Add two raisins (eyes) side by side near the edge of the cracker.
  3. Break four pretzel sticks in half.
  4. Place four pretzel sticks on each side of the cracker for the spider legs.
