Apple Smiles

Yields: 6 servings

Serving size: 6 smiles

You will need:

6 small apples, washed, cored and sliced into 1/8ths
1 1/2 cups creamy peanut butter
Miniature marshmallows
Raisins (optional)

Children can help you make this snack:

  1. Spread one side of each apple slice with 1/2-Tbsp. peanut butter.
  2. Place 3-4 miniature marshmallows on top of a plain apple slice. (Count aloud with the child the number of marshmallows using).
  3. Take a slice of apple with the peanut butter and place it on top of the apple slice with the marshmallows (peanut butter side down to stick to the marshmallows.
  4. Squeeze gently. Eat immediately.

*NOTE: Make sure that your children are not allergic to peanuts. If allergies are present, substitute cream cheese.

Apple Pizza

Yield: 8 slices

Serving Size: 1 slice

You will need:

1 can breadstick dough
1/2 stick butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 apples, washed, peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/8ths
3 to 4 tsp. cinnamon

What you will do:

  1. Take breadsticks and pat down flat and round onto a baking pan.
  2. Mix up cinnamon and sugar.
  3. Place apple slices on dough and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar mixture.
  4. Place a few small dots of butter on top.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes at 350ºF.

Aquariums

Yield: 3

Serving Size: 3 aquariums

You will need:

3 Graham crackers
Blue icing (canned or homemade) or cream cheese mixed with a few drops of food coloring

Goldfish crackers

What you will do:

  1. Allow the children to spread the icing on the graham crackers
  2. Top with the goldfish. Enjoy!

Creamy Garden Squares

Yields: 40 squares Serving Size: 2 squares

You will need:

1 1/2 cups biscuit mix
1/3 cups boiling water
2 Tbs. sliced green onions
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sour cream
1 tsp. dried dill weed
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
Mixture of fresh vegetables such as carrots, small pieces of tomato without seeds, or sliced mushrooms or shredded cheese

What you will do:

  1. Preheat oven to 450ºF.
  2. Mix biscuit mix, water, and green onions in a medium bowl until dough is soft.
  3. Beat dough quickly for 20 strokes.
  4. Press dough into ungreased a rectangular pan (13x9x2).
  5. Bake for 10 minutes or until light brown. Cool.
  6. While letting the dough cook and cool, mix cream cheese, sour cream, dill weed, and garlic powder until smooth.
  7. Spread evenly over cooled crust.
  8. Refrigerator for 1-2 hours or until chilled.
  9. Cut into 1 1/2-inch squares.
  10. Allow children to top the squares with their favorite vegetables or cheese.
  11. Refrigerate any leftovers.

Critter Crunch


Yield: 10 servings Serving size: 1/2 cup

You will need:

1 cup animal crackers
1 cup teddy bear shaped chocolate or honey flavored graham crackers

1 cup miniature pretzel twists

1 cup yogurt-covered raisins

1 cup candy-coated chocolate candies

Colorful ice cream cones (optional)

What you will do:

  1. Allow the children to mix all the ingredients together (except the ice cream cones) in a large bowl.
  2. Spoon the mixture into the cones, cups, or baggies.
  3. Serve.

Dinosaur Sesame Thins


Yields: 31 servings Serving Size: 4 thins

You will need:

2 cups enriched white flour
1/3 cup vegetable oil

1/4 cup unsweetened fruit juice

1 cup sesame seeds

1/2 tsp. salt (optional)

What you will do:

  1. Preheat oven to 325ºF.
  2. Combine flour and oil in a mixing bowl.
  3. Slowly add the fruit juice.
  4. Stop when the dough is soft and easy to handle.
  5. Add the sesame seeds (and salt, if desired).
  6. Mix thoroughly by hand.
  7. Roll out onto a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thick.
  8. Children can help cut the dough with a cookie cutter.
  9. Place on nonstick baking sheets and poke twice with a fork.
  10. Bake 20-25 minutes until edges are brown.

*Note: You can use different shaped cookie cutters such as a heart, flower, or even a gingerbread man.

Easy Nachos

Yields: 1 serving cowboy boot

You will need:

1 slice of cheddar cheese
2 crackers

1 teaspoon of prepared salsa

What you will do:

  1. Allow the children to place the cheese on the cracker.
  2. Put the salsa on the cheese slice and top with the other cracker.
  3. Microwave on High (100%) power for 10-15 seconds until the cheese is slightly melted.

Edible Jewelry

Yield: 4 Serving Size: 1 necklace

You will need:

2 cups of fruit flavored round cereal
2
/3 cups of round toasted oat cereal

2 packages of round gummy candy

Shoestring licorice (one for each child)

What you will do:

  1. Tie a knot at one end of each piece of licorice.
  2. Place cereal and candy into bowl so that the children can pick and string onto the licorice.
  3. When licorice is strung with the "jewels", tie the ends together so that the necklace can be worn and eaten.

*NOTE: Candy must be dime size or larger so that choking does not occur.
