Sand and Water Play

Sand Play with Young Children

Getting Started

        1. Sand play should be supervised by an adult at all times!
        2. Select areas for sand play. One area should be inside your home
and another area should be outside.

Choose a Container

* Sand tables can be purchased from an educational supply company. These tables can be used indoors and outdoors. Some other ideas are:

          • using a sandbox with a lid.
          • plastic tubs with lids.

Prepare the Sand

  1. Purchase sterilized non-toxic play sand. You can find play sand in the toy department of many stores. Do not use construction sand!
  2. Fill the container half way with sand.

Establish Rules

  1. Children should not eat sand.
  2. Children should not throw sand.
  3. Allow only two or three children to play with the sand at one time.
  4. Sand should be kept in a covered container when it is not being used. Uncovered sand can attract outside animals and insects .

Clean Up

  • When using sand indoors, cover the floor under the sand container with a drop cloth, sheet, or plastic shower curtain. Provide a small broom and dustpan for cleaning.
  • Keep the sand covered when the children finish playing with it. This will keep the sand clean.

Water Play with Young Children

Getting Started
    1. An adult should supervise water play at all times.
    2. Select an area near a sink for easy clean up.
    3. Consider the type of floor under the water table.
    4. Floors that become slippery when wet may cause the children to fall.

Choose a Container

Waterplay tables can be purchased from an educational supply company. These tables can be used indoors and outdoors. Some alternatives are:
  • using plastic dishpans.
  • pouring a small amount of water (1 inch or less) on trays for infants.

Establish Rules

  • Children should not put water in their mouth.
  • Water should not be poured on the floor.
  • Children should not throw water.
  • Limit water play to two children at a time.

  • Provide waterproof aprons to protect clothing. Inexpensive rain ponchos make great waterproof aprons.
  • Have towels, sheets, old newspapers, or drop cloths near the water play area for quick clean-ups. A plastic shower curtain can also help keep the floor dry under the water.
  • Always empty the water after it has been used. Never re-use water for water play!

Notes of Caution

  • Water play must be supervised at all times by an adult! Children have been known to drown in one inch of water!
  • Water tubs should be refilled daily to prevent the spread of disease. Sanitize water containers and toys daily with a water and bleach mixture.
