Dramatic/Make-Believe Play Activity Boxes

Dramatic/Make-Believe items should be changed frequently to keep children interested. One way to organize items is through the use of activity boxes. Use one activity box at a time with children and rotate the boxes frequently.

l Cleaning Include items such as a child-sized mop and broom, a dust pan, dust cloths, a feather duster, yellow cleaning gloves, a small bucket, and sponges.

l Cooking Include plastic mixing bowls, mixing spoons, measuring cups, clean and empty food boxes, plastic dishes, aprons, and plastic food.

l Dolls Include dolls of different colors and races, doll clothes, bottles, blankets, combs and brushes, and a pillow. Note of caution- Children and play items should be checked regularly to prevent the spread of lice. (hot spot to disinfecting unit)

l Grocery Store Provide crayons and paper for making a grocery list, clean and empty food boxes, shopping baskets, coupons, a small cash register, money (real money or pretend money, but coins should not be used), and paper bags.

Talk with the children about:
l Colors, sizes, and shapes of items
l Different ways to use items.
