Dramatic Play/Make-Believe for Infants and Ones

Materials for Dramatic Play/
Make-Believe Play
l Soft dolls of different races
l Plastic telephones
l Pots and pans
l Puppets

Dramatic Play/Make-Believe Ideas

Dramatic play items should be changed frequently to keep children interested.

l Puppets Purchase colorful puppets from discount stores or make your own using clean socks. Put a puppet on your hand and make it dance in front of the infant. Wiggle your fingers and make the puppet "talk" to the infant.

l Feeding the Baby Position a cloth doll near the infant. Show the infant how to hold a bottle near the doll's mouth. Talk to the infant about feeding the baby.

l Fill the Purse Collect an assortment of clean, soft purses. Check the purses for buttons or loose zippers that could harm young children. Gather an assortment of safe objects that will fit inside the purse (plastic keys, a wallet, or pictures). Let the infants and ones fill and empty the purse.

What Does the Child Learn Through Dramatic/Make-Believe Play?
l Small muscle development in hand
l Getting along with others
l Language development
l Pretending

Language Development

It is important for adults to talk and interact with young children during play. Show the infants and ones how to use the items you gather for dramatic /make-believe play. Talk with the children about the name, color, shape, or size of the items.
