Family Nutrition Program
Welcome to the Mississippi State University's FNP home page. Our mission is to provide nutrition education to individuals eligible for food stamps.
FNP in Mississippi is the Family Nutrition Program, a federally funded program with the purpose of improving the quality of life for persons of limited resources, specifically through educational programs structured to increase an individual's knowledge of food and nutrition, food buying and handling. FNP teaches individuals eligible for participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (previously The Food Stamp Program), or SNAP, how to improve their dietary practices and become more effective managers of available food resources.
Local FNP programs will identify target audiences and deliver, based on local needs, nutritional information to that audience. This process is facilitated by a collaborative partnership of the Mississippi State University Extension Service and agencies and organizations representing the needs of SNAP eligible individuals. Some of the broad objectives of the FNP are:
- to teach program participants nutrition principles, such as how to use the Dietary Guidelines and MyPlate.
- to teach program participants good meal management and food safety practices.
- to teach program participants how to use good food shopping strategies to cut costs.
- to teach program participants skills needed to enhance family meals.
The Family Nutrition Program (FNP) in Mississippi is sponsored by the Mississippi State University Extension Service, the Mississippi Department of Human Services, and the United States Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
