What is the Food Guide Pyramid?

The Food Guide Pyramid illustrates the food guidance system that helps you put the Dietary Guidelines into action. It shows you the relative amounts of food to eat from each of the five major food groups: 1) bread, cereal, rice, and pasta group, 2) vegetable group, 3) fruit group, 4) milk, cheese, and yogurt group, and 5) meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts group.

Each of these food groups provides some, but not all, of the nutrients you need. Foods in one group can't replace those in another. No one of these major food groups is more important than another for good health, you need them all.

Besides the five major food groups on the Food Guide Pyramid, there is the fats, sweets, and oils group. This group contains foods such as salad dressings, oils, cream, butter, margarine, sugars, soft drinks, candies, and sweet desserts. These foods provide calories and little else nutritionally. Most people should use them sparingly.
