Should I take supplements?

Most people can get all the nutrients they need by eating the variety of foods shown in the Food Guide Pyramid. It is not necessary to use a vitamin supplement or to choose special foods such as ready to eat cereals that have been highly fortified with extra vitamins and minerals. If you do take a supplement, choose one that supplies no more than 10 percent of the Daily Value for the vitamins and minerals per day. Vitamins or minerals and other supplements, such as protein powders, single amino acids, and so forth, have no known health benefits and may actually be harmful to health.
