As Mississippi State University Extension Service begins to take the program to communities, we hope to garner much community support from our health conscious friends. Specifically, we will need help in:
Organizing community/county initiatives. Local County Extension Service offices and Area Health Agents can provide leadership in the communities, but will need lots of support from other health promoting agencies within the communities.
Promoting the program within the community. It takes a lot of voices and hands working together to have a true community initiative. But if all the voices blend with the same message and all the hands pull in the same direction, communities can see tremendous positive change.
Conducting health screenings at kick-off and closing events to measure impact. Initial and concluding health measures will include blood pressure, body mass index, weight, and height. In addition, participants will complete a short survey of current physical activity levels and concerns. We will follow University Internal Review Board approved processes for all data collection.
Presenting lessons to participants. A different health promotion lesson will be delivered each week to participants. These lessons will be 30-45 minutes in length to fit a “lunch and learn” format. The lessons will be provided in the toolkit, complete with handouts. However, if a number of communities desire to begin the program simultaneously, the capacity of MSU Extension Service health educators may be exceeded. Thus, a need may exist for qualified partners to assist in program delivery.
