How can I participate?
Anyone is welcome to participate. Volunteers are not required to have a health education background. MSU Extension Service will provide the training you need to feel comfortable with the health lessons. All that the volunteer needs is a commitment to volunteering and to promoting healthy living within the community.
- The following categories of MHEVs exist to promote healthy living:
- Generalists master a variety of topics that relate to adult and youth health topics and requires 40 hours of community service.
- Smart Aging Healthy Future Volunteers targets the senior population, ages 55 and above, with health topics relative to aging in a healthy manner and requires 20 hours of community service as payback for the training.
- Healthy Lifestyle Volunteers deliver health messages focused on influencing one’s ability to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and requires 20 hours of community service.
- Combating Cancer Volunteers deliver health messages relative to cancer prevention, early detection, and living with cancer. A minimum of twenty community service hours is required.
- After the initial training and service obligation is complete, Master Health Education Volunteers are encouraged to continue service beyond the required amount of time by promoting healthy living in their communities through volunteering and helping organize various health events, serving in leadership roles that promote healthy communities, delivering health messages, and attending additional trainings promoting healthy lifestyles.
- Check the training events to find training opportunities scheduled in your area or to learn how to bring training to your community.
