What health education programs are available through my Extension county office?

Learn to Move, Move to Learn
This MSU-Extension video and detailed handout provides information on appropriate activities for toddlers and preschool children. The purposes of the activities are to promote physical well-being and skills development, while maximizing brain connectivity. Video is a tape of an actual program for toddlers and is useful in training parents and child caregivers.

Head Lice Are Dead Lice
Detailed lesson, a video, and mini-flyers on checking for head lice, nit and lice removal, using treatment products, reducing the chances of infestation, handling the environment, and using an alternative to the insecticide treatments for repeated lice outbreaks or failure to control with insecticide products.

    Brief Program gives guidance in using medicines safely and wisely
  • Take Good Care of Yourself
    This program is designed to teach clients how to observe health changes and how to handle some common, minor health problems at home, and to decide whether you need a health professional. Take better care of yourself and become an active partner in your health care.
  • Recognizing An Emergency
    Brief program in the nature and recognition of true emergencies will help you gain confidence in your ability to handle common health problems and successfully complete other first aid training.

Organizing Healthcare: Self Care 2

  • First Aid Made Simple
    Gather simple, essential first aid supplies and learn how they are used.
  • The Head-to-Toe Exam
    Provides the lesson outline and materials for a health professional to partner with Extension to teach clients basic self-exam skills. Advance course requires training and clients should have self-care training and have some experience in using selfcare.
  • Organizing Your Family Health and Safety
    Helps organize a family health history and immunization records, and guides the participant through the process of establishing a home health center and preparing for emergency action. Helps clients identify the need for preventive medical care and early medical treatment for more serious health problems.

Comprehensive Future Quest 4-Health
Youth Health Education using the 4-H Health...It's Your Choice and Future Quest 4-Health curriculum/supplements which are useful for brief programs, 4-H health projects, or more comprehensive, developmentally specific youth health group education. Promotes life and project skills that will help youth make good decisions and adopt healthy behaviors, and resist premature sexual activity, alcohol, tobacco, and other substance abuse. Curricula also available for training youth health peer educators in substance abuse prevention and sexuality issues.

Protect Your Health from Infections
This lesson provides information on the prevention of mild to serious infections. Healthy habits, the use of antibiotics, and common sense precautions to prevent the transmission of viral and bacterial diseases are discussed.

Safety is No Accident
Brief presentation uses 4 steps to teach safety: examine attitudes, pay attention, organize for safety, and develop good habits. Adapts well to parent, childcare groups and seniors as well as being useful for the general public.

Asthma and Allergies
Workshop for teachers, coaches, asthmatic adults, and parents of asthmatic children about the critical elements of asthma control and how to work with a physician to manage symptoms and attacks.

Master Health Education Blood Pressure Volunteers
Three-session workshop for volunteers to learn blood pressure screening technique and procedures. Long term volunteer commitment.

The New Breast Self-Exam
Brief program teaches women the steps to breast health and early detection of breast cancer. Training for Master Health Education Volunteers also available. The New BSE is an American Cancer Society program.

The 4 Elements of Diabetes Control
Vital information in this 30-45 minute workshop for diabetics and family members. Includes the four elements of blood sugar control lesson and how to work with a physician and dietitian and/or diabetes educator to manage diabetes. Recommended prerequisite for Dining with Diabetes Cooking School attendance. National Institutes of Health study manual provided for those already diagnosed with diabetes.

Childhood Health and Safety
Lessons on various health and safety aspects of prenatal and early childhood health and safety, including baby care, environmental threats, immunizations, dental care, poisoning prevention, injury prevention, and other age-related health needs.

Manage Stress Before It Manages You
Hour long program uses video to reinforce cognitive restructuring. Exercises and handouts also available.
