What are the
costs of diabetes?
In 1996, the direct (medical
care) and indirect (lost productivity and premature mortality) cost of diabetes
in Mississippi was estimated to be about $1.6 billion. Approximately 45%
of people with diabetics are not working at any given time. Compared to
nondiabetics, a greater percentage of persons with diabetes report being
unable to access a health care provider because of cost . The disparity
between people with diabetes and those who do not have the disease has lessened
in recent years, however. In addition, almost 20% of adult Mississippians
are uninsured, although there is little difference in rates of health care
coverage between diabetics and nondiabetics.
