Chronic Disease
Chronic diseases are
the leading cause of illness, disability, and death in the United States,
and the Southern States lead the nation in the incidence of many chronic
diseases. More people are living longer with chronic conditions than ever
before. Advances in medical care and public health have made it possible
for more infants and young children, as well as record numbers of older
people to survive with chronic diseases. By the year 2030, nearly 150
Americans are predicted to have a chronic condition; 42 million of these
will be limited in their ability to work or live independently. These
demographics translate into a tremendous challenge to our health systems
at a time when access and economic support for health services is uncertain.
