News You Can Use
Decorating Your Home
If you are rethinking your home’s look and feel, start by examining color. Color can have a dramatic effect – positive or negative – on a home.
Color is also an inexpensive way to change a room. A fresh coat of paint, new pillows, and accessories – all are ways you can introduce a new color and new look.
When selecting color for your home, here are some key considerations:
- Look around. What colors do you have in your home or furnishings now? Which do you like or dislike? Look outside as well. Nature provides interesting and provocative colors, combinations. What do you like? Go to the paint store and look at color chips to see what you are drawn to.
- Think about size. If the room is less than 12’ x 15’, light colors will make the room feel larger. If you want the room to appear longer, paint one wall a darker or more vibrant color. Coordinating color between rooms makes a house seem larger.
- Coordinate. Each room should have one dominant color. Also remember to repeat “supporting colors” throughout the room. If you have a teal chair, find a pillow or vase with the color as well.
- Neutral, not bland. “Un-colors,” like beige and eggshell are great for small spaces and a contemporary feel. To avoid having those colors disappear into the woodwork – literally – use different hues throughout the room.
