Wilkinson County: Title III Program

Forest Scene

Wilkinson County is in the beautiful piney woods of Southwest Mississippi. It's bordered by Adams County to the north, Amite County to the east and Louisiana to the south and west. Woodville, the county seat, was incorporated in 1811 and is home to The Woodville Republican, Mississippi's oldest newspaper and continuously run business. The Woodville Republican was established in 1823 and still publishes as a weekly newspaper today.

The total land base in Wilkinson County is 433,100 acres. Eighty percent (346,300 acres) are forestland. Private landowners own 68% (237,900 acres) of the total forestland in the county. The remaining 32% (108,400 acres) are owned by either forest industry or is public land. Wilkinson County is home to a portion of the Homochitto National Forest. Because of the large amount of forestland in the county, forestry is the number one commodity in Wilkinson County.
