Small Landowner Workshop

Small Landowner Workshop

A Small Landowner Workshop was held at Ethel Vance Park on August 21, 2004 with 130 landowners attending.

A wide variety of topics were covered during the morning. A logger discussed the costs involved with logging and the difficulties involved with running a logging operation. An attorney discussed issues and problems with owning land including liability issues. A surveyor discussed the importance of marking and maintaining boundary lines, plus how old lines are located and marked. Finally some cost share programs were discussed as options for landowners.


Regional Forestry Field Day

Field Day

A Forestry Field Day was held near Natchez on October 16, 2003. Fifty-five people from Adams, Amite, Franklin, Jefferson, Pike, and Wilkinson Counties attended.

The program emphasized hardwood tree planting and wetland management along the Mississippi River Delta. Cost share and partnership programs were discussed since tree planting and management of these areas can be very expensive.

Gary Young, Lower MS Valley Watershed Coordinator, U.S. Forest Service, and Calvin Lunceford, Private Lands Wildlife Biologist, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, discussed the Restoring the Delta and the Partners Program, which allows landowners to have trees planted or water control structures installed at very little cost to the landowner.

Representatives from the Farm Service Agency and the Natural Resource Conservation Service discussed the Conservation Reserve, Forestry Incentive, and Wetland Reserve Programs.

During lunch, Mike Oliver, Regional Biologist, Ducks Unlimited Inc., presented a slide presentation titled "History of the MS Valley to Today."

Adams County Small Forestland Owner Workshop

Amite Group

A workshop for forest landowners was held on August 23, 2003 at Ethel Vance Park. One hundred and forty-four landowners attended.

A wide variety of topics and presenters were provided. Reggie Jones, attorney, discussed the importance of wills and timber deeds for selling timber. Steve Prestridge, Procument Forester for Georgia-Pacific, followed Mr. Jones with a talk about timber marketing and some of the environmental issues that face landowners. Mike Daughdrill, President of Timberland Management Services, concluded the program by answering the question "Can I make money growing trees?"
