Amite County: Title III Program

Mississippi Welcome

Amite County is located in southwest Mississippi. It is bordered by counties on the north by Franklin and Lincoln; east by Pike county; and west by Wilkinson. It is bordered on the south by Louisiana. The county is transected by the Amite river. Liberty is the county seat and is located in approximately the center of the county. The county government has provided a business friendly community by being very efficient and keeping the millage rate at 55.6 the second lowest in the state.

Amite county consists of 467,000 acres. Of this total, 78% or 362,800 acres is forestland. Seventy one percent of this forest land is owned by the private landowner. The remaining 29% consists of industry and public land. A portion of the public land is the Homochitto National Forest that is located in the northwest corner of county. Because so much of the county is forestland, forestry is the number one crop in Amite County.

This web site is sponsored by the Amite County Board of Supervisors through Title III of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act of 2000.
