Corn Research

Mississippi producers planted 340,000 acres of corn in the state in 2006. Corn production in the Mississippi Delta had a nearly $70 million economic impact on the state's economy. Approximately 43 percent of Mississippi's corn is planted in the Delta.

Corn being harvested. The average yield for corn harvested in the Delta was 145 bushels per acre in 2006. The state average was 110 bushels per acre in 2006, and the national average was 149.1 bushels per acre.

Producers typically plant corn in Mississippi between March 1 and April 30. Harvest takes place between August 1 and September 30.

Due to the recent demand for corn biofuel production to make ethanol, Mississippi had its highest corn acreage in nearly 50 years with just under a million acres of corn planted in 2007. Mississippi corn acreage increased to 980,000 in 2007, up nearly 300 percent from 2006 when state corn acreage was 340,000.
