Catfish Research

Mississippi leads the nation in catfish production with about 94,000 water surface acres used in 2006.

Photo of catfish harvest Click to enlarge The state produces about 70 percent of the catfish industry's fingerlings, making Mississippi the largest supplier of catfish fingerlings in the country.

Catfish value of production to Mississippi's economy in 2006 was $273 million. Producers harvest catfish throughout the year with production occuring during the warm months between April and October.

Approximately 86 percent of the state's catfish production occurs in the Delta region of Mississippi.

Catfish research at the DREC is performed by researchers at the Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center located on the DREC campus in Stoneville.

Research areas include pathology, economics, fish behavior, nutrition and water quality.
