Disaster Preparedness & Recovery Information
Precautions when going home after a storm...
Do not enter your house unless you are sure it is safe and not about to fall down. Air out the house for several minutes to let foul odors and gas escape. Turn off the gas at the meter or tank. Use flashlights only, NEVER MATCHES OR OTHER OPEN FLAME.
Turn off electricity at the main switch and other circuits.
Wet plaster is dangerous. Break down loose plaster hanging from the ceiling before moving around inside the house. Watch for nails, splinters, holes, crumbling foundations, and gas leaks.
Carry a club or other weapon.
Wear boots and gloves.
Use rakes or other long-handled tools to clean up rubbish.
Look for snakes and rats in closets, furniture, drawers, mattresses, clothes, corners, basements, and attics.
