Disaster Preparedness & Recovery Information

How do I talk with children about tragic events happening in America?

As families, neighbors and teachers try to comfort each other, we are all trying to find the right words, especially in talking with the children we care for. Connect for Kids has gathered a few good resources for adults to help children with their fears and grief.

In response to the Columbine tragedy, Sesame Street Workshop developed a Web site, Tragic Times, Healing Words, on helping children cope with disaster. The site is still a useful tool for parents and teachers.

Place in the freezer plastic, one-gallon water jugs two-thirds to three-fourths full of water. The jugs will freeze without cracking. If the power goes out the frozen water will help keep the freezer cool, and when the ice melts the water will stay in the container and you still have drinkable water.
