What are the recommended maturity groups for Mississippi?

Traditionally, the South has grown determinate varieties and the northern areas indeterminate varieties. Maturity groups V and later are considered determinate, with Group IV and earlier groups indeterminate. Research conducted in Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi shows advantages to using earlier maturing varieties. In 1980, maturity groups VI and VII varieties occupied 90 percent of the state's acreage. Today 90 percent of the state acreage is planted in maturity groups IV and V varieties.

In addition to maturity groups IV and Vs, a portion of Mississippi's acreage is planted in Group VI varieties. These represent the bulk of the state's acreage. However, every year you can find limited acreage of maturity group III and VII varieties scattered around the state.
