Sorghum Production in Mississippi

Which crop is better suited; grain or sorghum?

Grain sorghum is an excellent crop to utilize in a crop rotation system, just like corn. However, grain sorghum's and corn's adaptability differ considerably.

Grain sorghum has about 30 percent less yield potential than corn under favorable growing conditions on good soils or when irrigated.

Grain sorghum has better drought tolerance than corn.

Fewer herbicide options are available for weed control in sorghum compared to corn.

Insect pests have traditionally caused more damage to sorghum than corn.

Thus, grain sorghum is best suited on soils with physical limitations which limit yield potential and promote drought stress, such as heavy clays.
