Sorghum Production in Mississippi

When is the optimum time to plant grain sorghum?

The minimum soil temperature required for sorghum germination is 65º F, with quick germination occurring after soil reaches 70º F. Since grain sorghum's germination temperature requirement is similar to cotton, optimum sorghum planting time is the same as cotton. This generally occurs during the last week of April and early May in most of the row crop areas of Mississippi.

Optimum grain sorghum seeding depth is 1.25 - 1.5", which is deeper than the optimum depth for cotton and soybeans.
