Mississippi
foundation seed production of Cheniere rice to be discontinued
Upon the rediscovery in February 2008 of
Liberty Link contamination within Mississippi Foundation
Seed of the rice variety Cheniere, the decision was rendered
on March 18, to terminate future foundation seed production
of the variety. Following
considerable discussion, the consensus was reached by representatives
of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station,
the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service, Registered Rice
Seed Growers, the Mississippi Rice Council, and the Mississippi
Rice Promotion Board.
Upon taking this action, considerable discussion
ensued regarding the development of a Mississippi rice seed
purity policy overseeing the production of head-row, breeder,
and foundation classes of seed. A committee to draft
such a policy has been appointed and is at work.
Further updates regarding this effort shall be forthcoming
as events develop.
